Attach-A-Deck and Stucco Boot from Attach A Deck
|

Attach-A-Deck was developed from a need. At the time I was building a 2 family “track” patio home project with a choice of 4 deck sizes. The exterior was stucco with many angles and cantilevers. Common flashing techniques were not working. There were too many potentials for leaks and moisture problems. Attaching the ledger to the stucco directly with a spacer would not work due to the “crushing factor” of the stucco resulting in loose lag bolt attachment points and my local Building Department does not allow direct attachment. As a former physics instructor I used some basic principals of physics and came up with the Attach-A-Deck device. The key principle of the Attach-A-Deck is that it is a “true structural spacer” connecting the deck ledger to the house band joist (rim joist). Thorough testing of Attach-A-Deck was done at the Wood Materials and Engineering Laboratory at Washington State University, an internationally recognized AIS materials testing lab. Attach-A-Deck is self sealing and may be used with multiple types of siding. Spacing the deck ledger away from the home with the Attach-A-Deck provides air circulation around the ledger for complete drying following precipitation or times of high humidity.
The Stucco Boot is the newest member of the Attach-A-Deck system. The Stucco Boot was designed for new construction stucco. The builder simply lays out a deck pattern on the side of the home. Next he or she determines the attachment points followed by drilling 2-3/4” holes through the sheeting. Finally the Stucco Boots are attached to the house. The stucco contractor simple stucco’s over the Stucco Boot. When the Attach-A-Deck device is added following stucco the builder will have a wate proof deck ledger attachment.
As a former production builder, one of my biggest problems was what size of deck do I put on a spec house. By using the Stucco Boot, the production builder will have the option at any point to put on any size deck in their portfolio. With the Stucco Boot Insert, the Stucco Boot is completely covered with stucco. When the deck style is determined, simply remove the inserts, replace with an Attach-A-Deck device and you are ready for the deck. Saves time and more importantly in our new economy saves money.
